Rabia Al Adawiyya, Hasan-Al Basri and beasts of the mountain

Publié le par Zahia

One day Rabia Al Adawiyya  had gone to the mountains, and hordes of wild beasts, goats and gazelles thronged about her. When Hasan al-Basri suddenly appeared on the scene, they all scattered in fright. Inwardly perturbed by this event, Hasan al-Basri  asked Rabia , "Why did they make friends with you but flee from me?"

"What was your meal today?" She asked in return.

"A mere broth," said  Hasan al-Basri .

"Well, you eat of their fat. Why shouldn't they be in fear of you?"

You love the world very dearly

Publié le par Zahia

Once a leading scholar of Basra visited Rabia AlAdawiyya while she was ill.ting beside her pillow, the scholar spoke about how terrible the world was. In reply, Rabia told him:"You love the world very dearly. If you did not love the world, you would not mention it so much. It is always the purchaser who first disparages what he wants to buy. If you were done with the world, you would not mention it either for good or evil. As it is, you keep mentioning it because, as the proverb says, whoever loves a thing mentions it frequently."

Once Hassan al basri went to Rabia and said: "In love's way so much you endured and all of this strength has come from you, so to me where this ability come from,do, this inner light you have...not by reading nor learnt from another, nor was copying."

Rabia replied:"O Master of this period, I did spin a small piece of coton thread...I went with them outside and them I sold,to get two coins of silver I was satified...I didn't receive each of them into one hand, I took one in one hand, other in other hand, for I was afraid that if they were together, clink would take me from the way forever."
